As is often the case a dry cough can happen to almost any one.  Unlike a productive cough, the dry cough does not bring up mucus or phlegm during the process of coughing.  There are a wide range of reasons that contribute to a dry cough, the primary being an allergy to dust or could also be  the result of dryness in the air.  Over the years there have been a number of good successful remedies that have cropped up among different cultures for a dry cough.

The primary role that the use of honey serves in a dry cough is to soothe the irritated muscles of the throat.  The thick consistency permits the honey to be kept coated on the muscles for a fair amount of time, thus increasing its effectiveness.  With the additives that bees add to the honey in its collection, only ensures that medicinal properties are imbibed by the honey. 

At most times, the honey can be used alone.  But there are certain cultures that mix the honey with cloves of garlic and a chip of ginger too. It does no harm and could be tried out in each case.  The winning combination is to be remembered to be used for each individual during subsequent bouts of dry cough. 

Salt Water Gargle

This could well be the most practiced home remedy for a dry and persistent cough.  Preferably, warm water with the most amount of tolerance is to be use for best effect.  The gargle aims at soothing the irritated muscles of the throat and is seen to be effective at the very beginning of a dry cough. A lot of people scoff at the idea of a gargle.  This is probably because the low cost solution is at times seen as frivolous and cannot be taken in seriously.  There could not be a more effective treatment of dry cough than a good gargle and it does not cost anything to practice.

Thyme Tea

Thyme has for ages been in the medicinal books of a lot of cultures, to provide relief from dry cough. The anti-septic and ant bacterial properties of thyme are well documented and people using traditional streams of medicine do still rely on its effectiveness. The use of thyme in coughs helps soothe the inflamed muscles of the throat and helps in reducing the intensity of the cough and finally removes it all together. Here care must be taken while brewing thyme tea.  The water must be brought to a just boil condition as higher temperatures could damage the oils in the thyme.  Usually with the old folks, they are well versed with the heat needed and the amount of brewing to be done. 

Ginger Peppermint Syrup

This could well be one of the most complicated of home remedies to Dry Cough.  Firstly the syrup has to be made using extracts of ginger and peppermint.  It is then made into a concentrate to be used at will.  The anti-mucous action of the ginger does help reduce the infection and produce a soothing effect to the affected person.  The peppermint does linger on in the throat to have a fresh feeling that would be welcome during incessant bouts of cough.  In fact, a lot of modern lozenges that are available off the shelf at the chemists have been made using this combination.
