Located in the
“Country of Heaven” a.k.a. Chengdu, Dujiangyan city affordseverything that you
can possibly think of to do and much more. There are a few unique things that
you can only do here which you will never forget for the rest of your life.
Here are the 5 unforgettable
things to do in Dujiangyan which are exclusive to the region:
Check out the historic Dujiangyan
Irrigation System
Built in the 3rd
century BC, Dujiangyan Irrigation System is one of three biggest water
conservation engineering projects taken up by the Qin dynasty rulers. Since it
is still in operational condition unlike the Air India airplanes, it is
considered as one of the most long-standing water management projects in the
world. Since it was built, there were no floods – a fact that exemplifies the
superior engineering capabilities of the ancient China. One of the best things
to do in Dujiangyan is to visit this historic place.
Visit the Historic Temples in Dujiangyan
As one of the
oldest towns in Sichuan, Dujiangyan has two historic temples, whichplayed a
significant role in shaping the Sichuan culture and history, namely Erwang
temple and Dragon-Taming Temple. Near the latter temple, a statue of Li Bing
was recovered from the river and it is known as the oldest stone statue of a
human in China. During the East Han Dynasty, this statue was used to monitor
the river flow for determining floods and droughts depending where the water
level is compared to the Li Bing statue. One of the best things to do in
Dujiangyan is to witness the history and religious traditions of the local
Sichuan culture.
Trek to the Back Peak of Qingcheng
Mountain
When talking
about historic temples in Dujiangyan, I didn’t mention the historic Taoist
temple at Mount Qingcheng because it is its own thing. Mount Qingcheng is a
home to not only one of the oldest temples in the region, but also hot springs,
watterfalls, breathtaking panaromic viewpoints, and to Dujiangyan Giant Panda
Center which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So it became a pretty popular
destination for tourists making it very crowded. That’s exactly why you should
trek to the mountain instead. You can avoid crowds and at the same time have a
great adventure to the back peak of the Qingcheng Mountain.
Hug a panda in Dujiangyan Panda Base
The best thing
to do exclusively in Dujiangyan that you can’t do anywhere else in the worldis
hugging a Giant Panda. Yes, you can hug a panda at the Dujiangyan Panda Base.
Also known as the Panda Ark, giant pandas are endemic to the dujiangyan region
and so the panda center breeds and trains pandas to return to the wild. At the
Panda Valley, you can truly see the will Giant Pandas living peacefully in
their natural habitat.
Take a stroll in the Nature Parks of
Dujiangyan
Who don’t like
to take a stroll in a peaceful and serene park? In fact, many people including
me enjoy it. The city has two major nature parks to offer such as Dujiangyan
Forest Park and Mt. Yulei Park. One of the best things to do in Dujiangyan is
to take a casual walk in the park and enjoying the serene and peaceful
surroundings.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the Dujiangyan city
was the inspiration behind the Kung Fu Panda animated movie? In fact, the panda
on which the main character Po was modeled after was bred, trained and returned
to the nature here in the Panda Valley.
