How to Find Out If Your Drinking Water Is Safe

If you completely depend on your local water for your water consumption needs, then it is critically important that your local water is tested to ascertain its purity. Here are some fool proof ways to know whether your drinking water is safe for consumption.

Water Sedimentation Indications along with discoloration of water are major indicators of water impurity and contamination. However, the surest way of mapping water contamination is laboratory testing.

Complete Laboratory Testing

The most genuine way to know whether water is good or bad is by getting the water tested in one of the reputed water quality test laboratories. In most cases there are no visible symptoms of water contamination and the sources of contamination can only be determined by a water testing laboratory.

You need to take a sample of local water source and submit it to the water testing agency for a complete analysis. MCL or Maximum Contaminant Level as prescribed by WHO is used as a standard when it comes to water testing.

Arsenic Contamination

If there I heavy metal/ arsenic contamination in water, then the ideal solution to purify such water is to use RO Purifier or Reverse Osmosis Unit. Though there are other techniques to remove arsenic from good water but RO is the most dependable way of removing metal contamination. Arsenic contamination cannot be determined by any other method apart from laboratory testing. The Point of Use water purifier should be installed in the kitchen or from wherever drinking water is accessed in the house. Another option is to install activated alumina and ion exchange resins.

Foul Odor in Water

Sometimes water can have a bad smell to it (like rotten eggs) and this is primarily caused by Sulphur contamination or proliferation of sulfur bacteria that produces H2S gas. If your water supply comes from a well then rotting vegetation can produce this Sulphur contamination. Physical cleaning of the water source and pumping some water out before adding a little chlorine bleach is the answer to this problem. If H2S contamination is high, then a calcium/ sodium hypochlorite pump has to be installed.

Muddy Water Issues

The correct way to purify muddy water is to insert a solution of Alum in the water source/ primary hold tank. Almost all public water authorities use Alum for water purification in the proportion of 50 gm: 10 liters (alum: water). If the water is essentially pure but suffers from turbidity, then an Activated Carbon Filter along with simple cartridge filter should be used on the point of source of water.

Iron in Water

High amount of iron in drinking water causes a lot of health issues like hair fall, skin problems and digestive issues. Iron salts can be extracted away from the water in many ways and usually this involves oxidation of iron salts. There are many ways like aeration of good water, chlorination of the whole water source and zonation. Manganese Greensands and Pyrolusite filters are also used to remove iron from water.
